We planned our whole day trip carefully ; the goal was to leave early so we could explore more of Budapest. Since the travel time from our accommodation was almost three hours, we needed to leave by 7 AM. I booked the 7:05 AM bus and felt relieved knowing everything was set. The bus station was located in the parking lot of a huge shopping mall, which honestly made the morning feel a little exciting already. When we arrived, we quickly grabbed breakfast from McDonald’s before rushing to the bus stop, worried we might miss the bus.
Just as we got downstairs, I received a message saying the bus would be delayed by around 40 minutes. So, we waited patiently, trying not to let it ruin the mood. But when the bus finally arrived and we showed our online tickets, the driver told us we weren’t booked for that bus and insisted we were scheduled for the next one instead. We were frustrated because we were already behind schedule, and what made it worse was that he didn’t even try to help us double-check the booking. When we checked the app ourselves, it clearly showed that we were supposed to be on that bus, but too late since it was already far.
At that point, we had no choice but to buy another set of tickets for the availble trip which was another hour and a half away. It felt like everything that could go wrong that morning already had. Still, we tried to shake it off and make the best of it. The second bus was delayed too, but eventually, we arrived in Budapest a little past 2 PM.
By then, we knew we had very limited time to explore, but instead of stressing over it, we laughed it off and just enjoyed the day as it came. From the station, we took a cab straight to the thermal bath house, and honestly, it was worth every bit of the trouble we went through. The experience was incredibly relaxing and memorable. Personally, I would absolutely come back just to experience it again.
Afterwards, we headed to the Chain Bridge and walked across it. Seeing Budapest from there felt surreal. The beauty of the city, the magnificent views, and the incredible architecture left me speechless. I couldn’t stop admiring the people who built those structures ; every detail carried so much history and artistry.
Later that evening, we had dinner at a nearby Korean restaurant before our 7 PM river cruise. The food was amazing. The bibimbap, japchae, and all the side dishes were absolutely superb, but the kimchi stood out the most, it was authentic, flavorful, and honestly one of the best I’ve had.
Right after dinner, we went straight to the cruise point. The one-hour river cruise turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. Not only did we learn so much about Budapest, but seeing the Hungarian Parliament illuminated at night was breathtaking. I was completely in awe. “Rapt” is probably the best word to describe how I felt in that moment. It was one of those experiences that stays with you long after it ends.
After the cruise, we made our way back to the bus station and headed home, exhausted but happy.
Looking back now, all the struggles and mishaps from that day became part of the adventure itself. Despite everything, we still managed to enjoy the city and make beautiful memories out of it. And maybe that’s what makes trips unforgettable- not because everything goes perfectly, but because you still find joy in the middle of the chaos.
Budapest, you now hold a special place in my heart, and I know someday, I’ll come back to explore you again.
